How Photoelectric (Optical) Smoke Detectors Work

A photoelectric smoke detector, also known as an optical smoke detector, operates using the principle of light scattering to detect the presence of smoke particles in the air. Compared to conventional detection methods, photoelectric technology provides fast and reliable detection of smoldering fires while significantly reducing nuisance alarms.

How optical smoke detector works

Optical Smoke Detection Principle

Inside the smoke detector is a specially designed optical sensing chamber containing an infrared LED transmitter and a photodiode receiver. Under normal conditions, the infrared light emitted from the LED travels within the chamber without reaching the photodiode sensor directly.

When smoke particles enter the chamber through the air labyrinth, the particles scatter the infrared light in multiple directions. Part of this scattered light reaches the photodiode receiver, which converts the optical signal into electrical signals. The detector electronics continuously analyze these signals and, once the programmed threshold level is exceeded, an alarm condition is generated.


Detection Process

  1. Infrared LED emits controlled light pulses into the optical chamber.
  2. Smoke particles enter the chamber through dedicated smoke entry paths.
  3. Smoke particles scatter the emitted infrared light.
  4. Scattered light reaches the photodiode receiver.
  5. Detector electronics process the signal using intelligent algorithms.
  6. Alarm output is activated and notification devices are triggered.
